A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place officially recognized as having outstanding value to humanity—so important that it deserves protection for future generations.
🌍 What makes a site “World Heritage”?
To qualify, a place must be unique, irreplaceable, and globally significant in at least one of these ways:
- Cultural – historic cities, monuments, architecture, archaeological sites
- Natural – landscapes, forests, mountains, coastlines, ecosystems
- Mixed – places that are both culturally and naturally significant
🏛️ Why it matters
- Recognizes our shared human history and natural wonders
- Encourages preservation and responsible tourism
- Helps protect sites from damage, neglect, or overdevelopment
- These places belong to everyone, not just the country where they’re located
🌎 Examples you might recognize
- Historic city centers
- Ancient ruins
- National parks
- Sacred landscapes
- Traditional agricultural regions
