Pop Up Hike Spanish Pond Trailhead
Details
The weather is just too nice to stay indoors this week so join me for a pop up hike at Spanish Pond Trailhead of Timucuan Preserve (across from Fort Caroline) on Thursday, October 16 at 8:30 am. We will meet to sign in and then walk about 4 miles through this lovely diverse natural area. The trail follows a boardwalk through a wet area, through a mixed hardwood forest, climbs a bluff overlooking the marsh, past shell middens, to a wooden observation tower overlooking Round Marsh. From there the trail passes historical markers about Willie Brown's life on the land including his house site and cemetery. The trail is well maintained but there are lots of roots and may be some soft or muddy areas.
There is no restroom at the Spanish Pond trailhead but there is one mid-hike at Theodore Roosevelt parking area, which might or might not be open due to the shutdown. Bring water, snacks, bug spray, closed toe shoes, trekking poles optional, no dogs on this please. This will be a leisurely hike with plenty of stops to admire the views, plants, and wildlife.
