What Makes Skiddaw House Special
Built in 1829 as a shooting lodge and shepherd’s bothy, Skiddaw House is England’s highest and most remote hostel — accessible only on foot or by bike. There are no roads, no mains power, and no phone signal — only solar lighting, wood-burning stoves, and water drawn from the fell itself.
Inside, guests will find:
• Warm communal spaces with log fires and candlelight
• Comfortable bunkrooms (shared)
• A small on-site shop and honesty bar (cash only)
• Hot showers powered by solar energy
• No plugs, Wi-Fi, or mobile reception — just peace, stars, and mountain silence.
Potential Itinerary
Day 1: Keswick → Skiddaw House via Latrigg (approx. 7 miles)
A gentle ascent from Keswick through forest trails and fell paths, taking in panoramic views of Derwentwater and the surrounding peaks. We’ll arrive at Skiddaw House by late afternoon, light the stoves, and settle in for our first night off-grid.
Day 2: Skiddaw Summit & Surrounding Fells
A full day’s hike to the summit of Skiddaw (931m), with the option to add nearby peaks such as Little Man or Bakestall. The day ends back at the hostel, where we’ll share a communal meal and, if skies are clear, enjoy stargazing in complete darkness — a truly unforgettable experience.
Day 3: Return to Keswick
We descend by an alternate route, possibly skirting the slopes of Blencathra, before joining the scenic old railway trail leading back into Keswick.
