March is one of the best times of year on Yakima River for Dry Fly Fishing. The flows are low, the water is clear and multiple hatches are happening, and the weather is almost always warmer and drier than Seattle.

Our Yakima River trip will be floating down from secret hole after secret hole, with 1 to 3 anglers per boat!! Tell guide what is your goal!! Like do you want to catch many or the biggest of the day? Or would like more knowledge or lesson or two on Euro, Dry, Indicator or Swing?

What if there is no Skwala hatch? Do I go home? Haha, no way! Your guide has plenty of other tricks up his sleeve to keep you entertained. Just remember that March weather and water conditions can be unpredictable, so the skwala hatch might happen for less than hour, so you might miss it !! So, stay persistent with dry flies, but have a backup plan ready and don't hesitate to try various small nymphs, especially worms or streamers if the water is muddy or cold. We should also have a Blue Winged Olives, Drakes and March Browns hatches. This is why is one of are most popular events.

### Get out all your stuff, and get reorganize !!! THINK and BRING LESS!!! Guides will bring rods and flies, however no lunch!!!

### You only need to bring very few things. Moreover, do NOT bring box of flies nor backpack nor fishing vest. Guides bring over 100 or more flies for free

RIG UP TIP OPTIONS For 1 or more rods.
• (Dry Fly) use a nylon tapered leader 4x 7' to 9' with 5X 1' Nylon tippet.
• (Euro fishing) try 10 to 30' tippet in 0-3X with 2' fluorocarbon 4x tippet.
• (Swinging) No sink tip is needed, just 3' leader of 3X nylon tippet.
• Indicator fishing. (Do not use a tapered leader. Instead, use your thickest tippet about 3 to 6' with 2'-4X nylon tippet.)

WHAT TO WEAR
Always bring all the following in the smallest dry bags, the weather might be rainy, windy, freezing to 80 at any point in the day!!

• NO COTTEN!! Only WOOL or Poly
• Hat!!
• Sunglasses!!
• Light weight raincoat "MUST HAVE SEALED SEEMS"
• Waders or Waterproof pants
• Boots (NO SPIKES)
• Long sleeve shirts SPF 50
• Mutiple Vest, yes bring more than one especially a puffy
• Avoid anything with cotton
• Dry Bags with your snacks and LUNCH!!! bring your own lunch!!

## Ten Skwala Stonefly Fishing Tips

The first thing to keep in mind is that the water is still cold. Adult Skwalas don't start to hatch until the outdoor weather is above 50 degrees, although we have seen them hatch around the 40 degree mark. In cold water the fish are not going to live in traditional whitewater riffles. They are going to be in the slower walking speed pools, especially on the edges where the water is less than 24" deep.

7. Get long QUIET drifts. Careful mending, this ain't July hopper fishing.
8. Dry fly when temp is above 50+ or you see a rise
9. Always have 2 rods ready, with one of them ready for the hatch with Chernobyl ant with tungsten dropper I like a SJ worm.
10. Don't expect big numbers, hope for 1 big fish. Be ok with just catching very few fish.
11. Dress warm and invest in a heated vest and Windstopper jacket with hood.
12. Try twitching your fly in calm water (just make a subtle ripple around your fly)
13. Change flies and size every hour or have a few rods set up with different styles and flies
14. Focus on slow, clean, and quiet drifts. total 9' leader length will help.
15. Let the fish see your fly delicately land... creating a small ring of ripples that sells it as the real thing. Female Skwalas typically fly and land on the water to lay eggs mid-day.
16. Bonus tip. Mentally adopt the strategy of catching ONE fish at a time. Stalk, think, make perfect casts. Catch ONE fish then worry about the 2nd. Then repeat.... again and again.

The Yakima River, located in WA State about one to two hours east of Seattle, just over the Cascade Mountains. It is Washington only Blue Ribbon River and a popular day trip destination for anglers. Many choose to go out the day before often staying the resort Canyon River Ranch Lodge, conveniently situated next to Red's Fly Shop. We love to dine together at the award winning Canyon River Grill next door. You can get your Breakfast ,Lunch and Dinner there as well as ....and any type of coffee.
