Surprise and Glacier Lakes are in the Central Cascades of Steven's Pass West. Jack and I did this hike last August and it was about 9 miles roundtrip. I'm going to recommend bringing micro spikes as there is probably going to be some snow. The lake is a lovely lunch stop with flat rocks. The trails starts out fairly easy over the first 3 miles with a pleasant grade. The last 1.5 miles is steep with over 1000 feet elevation gain. I believe the total elevation gain to Surprise Lake is maybe 2300 feet. It's 2700 to Glacier Lake so I'm taking a best guess. If for any reason we arrive and there is deep snow we will backtrack across the highway to Iron Goat trail that is close by.
Let's meet at the trailhead by 9am and be ready to go by 9:15,
Parking Pass is Northwest Forest Pass. No privy at trailhead but there is one at Iron Goat Interpretive Site.

Driving Directions: From Monroe, drive east on Highway 2 to the town of Skykomish and continue for another 10 miles. After you pass the the Iron Goat Interpretive Site on your left, drive another 0.3 mile and take an unmarked right. Follow this road for 0.2 mile through the old railroad community of Scenic, though nothing remains of the town but railroad tracks. Cross the tracks and immediately turn right, parallel to the tracks, following a dirt road for 0.3 mile. You will come to a small parking area which can hold at least six cars, and another similar parking area just beyond it at the trailhead.
