PERMACULTURE BOOK CLUB: "Gathering Moss" in Merrillville!

Details

This peer-led reading group will meet at Becca's house in Merrillville on Fridays in person from 5:30 - 7:30 PM central starting July 11th. We will decide as a group how many sessions we need to meet. Participants can come reading the first 2 chapters of the book this first week. The Standing Stones and Learning to See chapters.

Our Q3 Book Club text is Robin Wall Kimmerer's Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses. A collection of personal essays that explores the lives of mosses, blending scientific knowledge with indigenous perspectives to reveal the intricate relationships between mosses and their environment, using the seemingly simple moss as a metaphor for deeper ecological understanding and ways of living in harmony with nature; the book draws on the author's experiences as a scientist, mother, teacher, and Native American heritage to weave together biology and cultural stories about mosses. Participants can find the book on Libby and Audible.

Your host, Becca, earned her PDC from Rhonda Baird in 2023. She lives on a one-acre growing homestead and works as the urban agriculture educator for Purdue Extension Lake County. Her homestead has ducks, chickens, guinea pigs, dog and cats. Features onsite include a shallow pond for water catchment, a fruit and nut tree guild, several pollinator plantings, 4 raised vegetable beds, and a natural playscape made of fallen wood and earth mounds. There is also a playground for the kids-families are welcome to bring their kids to this book club.

We can only accommodate 6 additional cars in our driveway-there is no street parking. Carpooling is encouraged. If a car doesn't fit, Walmart is down Colorado St. and we can pick you up there. Becca will provide light refreshments. Others are encouraged to bring a snack to share.

Please consider making a donation to this Meetup Group! This group is maintained by a voluntary team who wish to spread the good vibes of permaculture and healthy relationships with the land and people, and your support for this site helps make this happen. Donations can be made in person to Hillary Miles on the day of the event, or via the donations link on the NWI Permaculture Meetup main page. Thank you!
