 21.00 Doors close- This month's talk is: Machine Learning in Science at the University of Nottingham: from fundamental research to practical applications. - Machine Learning in Science (MLiS) is an initiative of the University of Nottingham, led by the School of Physics and Astronomy, to develop training and fundamental and applied research into AI from the perspective of science. We will describe the range of activities of MLiS, and show a number of applications of our work into practical problems. These will include (i) an automated AI scientist capable of independently conducting scientific research, generating hypotheses, and executing experiments, representing a step toward autonomous scientific discovery; and (ii) a Physics AI assistant that provides students with contextual support and personalized guidance tailored to our curriculum. - Juan P. Garrahan is a Professor of Physics at the University of Nottingham. His research covers a broad area of statistical physics including the statistical mechanics of machine learning. He obtained his PhD from the University of Buenos Aires, was a Glasstone Fellow at the University of Oxford, an EPSRC Advanced Fellow, a visiting professor at UC Berkeley, and a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. At Nottingham he directs the Machine Learning in Science Initiative. - Dr. Adam Moss obtained his PhD in 2006 and is the author of over 100 scientific papers, with extensive experience in cosmology and astrophysics including work on the Planck experiment.
