Cafe Sci: Shaping the world since 1818 : the Institution of Civil Engineers
Details
John Read
Associate director, ARAP Nottingham
Two hundred years ago in 1818 a group of young engineers met in a London Coffee house and formed a professional society of Civil Engineers. This talk will be about the early years of this institution, who these young engineers were, and how Civil engineering became a separate field, and has developed since.
John is a chartered Civil and Structural Engineer with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He is an Associate Director leading the office of Arup in Nottingham, an international firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists working across every aspect of today's built environment.
He has been regularly attended Café Sci talks in Nottingham (when work commitments allow) since the Wax bar days in the early 2000’s.
MEETING FORMAT: Our speaker talks, uninterrupted for 20 minutes, to introduce their topic. During a break to get drinks, the Hat goes round. Then there is an hour’s chaired question and answer session. Cafe Sci is funded by the Hat (no sponsors). We suggest a contribution £2 (waged or good pension) or £1 (unwaged).
