The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
(Nominated by Nishal, 368 pages)

This month, we are discussing Arundhati Roy’s 1997 novel, The God of Small Things. Set in Ayemenem, Kerala, the narrative jumps between 1969 and 1993; focusing on the lives of twins Estha and Rahel. The story examines the tension between 'Big Things' such as the caste system, Marxist politics, and social 'Love Laws' and the titular 'Small Things' of individual experience.

What to Expect
Our book discussion typically lasts 90 minutes. We begin with the book nominator giving their reasons for the choice and their feelings on the book, then each attendee shares their initial thoughts in turn. Following this structured start, the floor is opened for a more free-flowing discussion on themes, characters, and other relevant ideas. The evening often concludes with members moving to the main bar for a social catch-up and a drink.
