The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui @ Lace Market Theatre
Details
"Set in Chicago during the Great Depression, the play follows small-time crook Arturo Ui, a ruthless schemer who uses calculated charm to seize control of the city’s vegetable trade. From there he rises to power through intimidation, corruption and fear. As his criminal empire expands, Ui’s influence begins to infiltrate markets, politics and the law itself.
This new version of Bertolt Brecht’s 1941 biting satire draws sharp parallels between Ui’s underworld manoeuvrings and the rise of fascism in Europe, exposing the fragility of democracy and the dangers of unchecked ambition."
[By coincidence this play is also being produced by the RSC in April at Stratford-on-Avon, starring Mark Gatiss! Topical.]
