Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem - History:
"As England's oldest inn, the pub is nestled beneath the cliff on which Nottingham's historic castle stands, and was once a well-known pit stop for crusader knights. It is said that King Richard the Lionheart and his men are more than likely to have gathered at this historic royal dwelling before journeying to Jerusalem in 1189AD, thus giving the pub its unusual name.Beneath the pub, cave cellars root deep into the sandstone cliff and, like many of Nottingham's 800+ caves, have for centuries been used for storage of ale. Also located in the cellars is an old cockfighting pit and part of the Castle Gaol was said to be housed in the cellars at one time. This included the condemned cell, a small cell with a very low ceiling with small holes drilled to allow a little air to flow through. The Gaoler would have sat just outside the cells on the โ€˜Gaolerโ€™s Chairโ€™ which was etched out of the rock and can still be seen today."

Ye Olde Salutation Inn - History:
"The Ye Olde Salutation Inn, known as "The Sal", is a historic pub in Nottingham, claiming to be one of the city's oldest, with parts dating back to around 1240. It's also famous for its association with paranormal activity and a rumored history of 89 apparitions. The inn has a rich history, including stories of accidental poisoning, ghostly encounters, and the impact of the caves beneath the pub.
History and Claims:

  • Ancient Origins:
The Salutation Inn claims to be one of the oldest pubs in Nottingham, with parts dating back to around 1240.
  • Paranormal Activity*:***
It is known for its claims of being haunted, with a landlord once claiming to have witnessed 89 apparitions.
  • Accidental Poisoning:
There's a story of a landlord in 1820 who accidentally poisoned his family with arsenic, which was commonly used as rat poison in groundwater.
  • Ghostly Encounters:
The pub is associated with several ghostly tales, including those of former landlords who died on the premises.
  • Cave History:
The inn is built on a network of caves that are believed to have been used for storage and other purposes in the past."

The Bell Inn - History:
"The Bell is a Grade II listed building. As the street names in and around the pub suggest, it was built on the site of a Carmelite monastery, or friary, where the Nottingham Whitefriars would set about their practices.
While the pub itself dates back to roughly the 15th Century, the friary is thought to have been built some time in the 1200s in Beastmarket Hill, before eventually being erased from the map following Henry VIII's so-called 'dissolution of the monasteries'.
The building was originally built to serve as a refectory, or dining hall, to the friary before this time.
Afterwards it would go on to become a secular alehouse.
Today street names such as Friar Lane, St James's Street and Angel Row are the only remaining signs of a time period lost within the city's more contemporary developments. The original flagstones still exist in the main passageway to this day.
Permission was granted in 1974 to put tables and seating outside the front of the pub, and it would go on to become a Grade II listed building in 1982.
The pub is now in the hands of pub chain Greene King and the bell on the building's frontage dates from 1811 to 1820."
