NoVA CBG About Page

Welcome to the Northern Virginia Casual Biking Group (NOVA-CBG). For your cycling pleasure, please join us for various casual bicycle rides around the area.  **************************************
How Do We Define "Casual"? :  ***************************************   Well, we really don't pressure anyone to be a professional cyclist.* We don't ask you to own any special gear (except for a helmet).* We don't ask you to wear special outfits (unless you want to).* All we ask is that you come as you are comfortably with a bike that is in well-tuned shape and a helmet. We ride with a "no man left behind" philosophy so that everyone can enjoy themselves without fear of getting lost or left behind. So the ride may have a few extra "re-grouping" stops if that is required due to various riding skills. Because of this philosophy we really try to ask that the cyclist's riding skill matches the ride they are on.
**************************************
Ride Levels:  ************************************** NoVA CBG tries to accommodate all levels of cyclists by offering different types/levels of rides. We just ask that you come to the ride that suits your current riding ability the best.
*Introductory Level:
If you haven't ridden a bike in a number of years (or are uncertain of your abilities on a bicycle).

*Beginner Level:
You can easily ride your bike for 10 miles with some minor hills at a comfortable pace of 12+ mph.

*Medium Level:
You can do 20 miles pretty easily at a moderate pace of 13 to 15+ mph.

*Advanced Level: You can do 20++ miles easily at a 15+ pace and / or handle various challenges as rain, night riding, or other odd cycling situations.
**************************************
Riding Requirements:  ************************************** Just like every other group we DO have some riding requirements:  1) Helmets are mandatory for every ride we do, no exceptions... period.
2) All riders ride at their own risk and with the understanding that cycling is an inherently dangerous activity. Participating in a NoVA-CBG ride is voluntary and riders must be ready and able to participate in the ride as described in the meetup and under the conditions of the day. Riders have read and acknowledged by an RSVP 'YES' MEETUP.com's "Terms of Service : Section 6. Release " found at https://www.meetup.com/terms/ and NOVA-CBG's "Assumption of Risk Agreement" found @ https://www.meetup.com/novacbg/pages/1942951/NOVA-CBG_Waiver/.
3) Just in case there is an emergency situation you should always have on you Identification, Insurance, and any other important medical information.
4) All riders must be at least 18 years of age.
5) No music is allowed on any of the rides. Headphones or otherwise.
6) We have a "three strikes" NO SHOW policy, so please honor your RSVP or change it accordingly as soon as your situation changes.
**************************************
Membership Dues:  **************************************  Your first two months in the group are free, after that we have an annual $10.00 membership fee.  This fee helps defer the cost of the MEETUP fees and facilitates our Annual "Company" Picnic and Annual Holiday Party.  In addition these dues allow us to perform our Tire Changing and Gear classes and our Bike In Movies series during the winter.

Welcome to The Koffee Klatch! These rides are generally based off the Arlington Loop where we will visit different area coffee shops or bakeries for a cup and/or treat if desired. You don't have to drink or even like coffee to participate.

This will be a 18.8 mile ride (mapped by our own Dan) mostly on roads with some challenging hills in North Arlington ending up in Falls Church for coffee and pastries at The Happy Tart, on mile 14.3. After the rewarding stop we head up to the W&OD at Virginia Lane/Shreve Rd and then back to Bluemont Park.

Medium(+) Level: CBGs Thanksgiving Frozen Turkey Trek NEW ROUTES! (25 or 35mi)

Columbia Island Marina, Washington, DC, US

Let's burn off some of those Thanksgiving calories BEFORE we eat them and we've got new routes for ya this year!!!

    The Ride: Detail
    ++++++++++++++++++++
Enjoy a mostly flat, Thanksgiving Day ride with your CBG friends. This ride includes the option of a shorter ride (25 miles/approximately a noon finish) for those who have to get home to cook, AND a longer ride (35 miles/approximately 1:30 pm finish) for those who have more time to spare.

We'll depart Columbia Island and head into DC where we'll be on a mix of bike trails, cycle tracks, and streets. We'll pass by the Wharf and take the Frederick Douglass Bridge over the Anacostia and hop on the Anacostia River Trail (ART). We’ll take the ART up to Bladensburg Waterfront Park and regroup at mile 12.5 where there are bathrooms and water fountains.

At that point, those that prefer the 25 mile ride will head south, cross the Benning Road Bridge, ride pass the old RFK Stadium, and pedal for home. Those that prefer the 35 mile ride will head north to Lake Artemesia for a loop before turning around and heading back to Columbia Island.

This is a Medium (+) ride due to the distance and street riding, but it will be a lot of fun and a great way to kick off Thanksgiving morning.

We hope you'll bundle up, grab your bike, and come join us!

Let's build up an appetite by pedaling out to see the 'Reclining Liberty' art installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Arlington (now a permanent attraction).

Reclining Liberty takes inspiration from the giant reclining Buddha statues of Asia, which represent the Buddha in one stage on the path to enlightenment and are a theme throughout Buddhist art. By merging the traditional Buddhist reclining pose and the quintessential American figurative symbol, Reclining Liberty asks the viewer to contemplate the status of the ideals the Statue of Liberty represents.

When we are done with our "contemplation" we will stop just up the street for coffee & a treat at Northside Social before heading back home. 13 miles total. Then of course off to our individual Thanksgiving plans.

Planning on being back in Shirlington NLT 1:30pm (but thinking earlier). We hope you'll bundle up, grab your bike, and come join us!

For your pleasure NoVA CBG presents .... the Harbor Holidays Ride.

We have gone over to see the tree in years past, but new this year is the light show the tree puts on. And since it is a Saturday night we will be there for the fireworks as well. All of this is outside so dressing appropriately for RIDING THERE, as well as STANDING THERE is very important.

NIGHTLY TREE LIGHT SHOW: SHOW RUNS EVERY HALF HOUR FROM SUNSET TO 9PM

    • Watch the 60-foot RGB tree come to life nightly.
    • The breathtaking light show dances alongside a holiday medley recorded by the United States Air Force Band.

    SATURDAY NIGHT FESTIVE FIREWORKS

Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights on Saturday, Dec. 7th, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. when more than 50 brightly lit boats cruise along one mile of the Potomac River shoreline from Canal Center to Ford’s Landing Park.
