Join us in Northern Virginia for a 2 ½ day introductory workshop and design your own 100% custom PCB. The last time Anool ran this workshop, EVERY student successfully sent a design out for manufacture.

DATES: September 11, 12 and 13, 2015 (Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday)

COST: $225

What is the money used for? The tuition covers coffee, lunches and snacks. And also helps to offset Anool’s (the instructor) travel expenses from India. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to support KiCAD development (https://giving.web.cern.ch/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=6)(we donated $500 last time).

What software will we use? KiCAD (http://www.kicad-pcb.org/). It is free and Open Source and amazing.

EVENTS : We have teamed up with the awesome folks at Hackaday (http://hackaday.com/), who will host a “Bring-a-Hack” event (https://hackaday.io/event/7113-hackaday-prize-worldwide-dc) at NoVa Labs on Saturday evening (12th Sept).

Also, Bob Coggeshall of Small Batch Assembly (http://www.smallbatchassembly.com/) will talk about “Design for Manufacture” and give a tour of his Assembly workshop including the Pick and Place machine.

Anool is an Electrical Engineer, working in the field of Test & Measurement at Lumetronics (http://www.lumetron.com/). When not working at his day job, he dabbles in Astronomy, Origami, Photography, Tinkering, Hacking, and Cycling. His choice for the daily commute (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8OfxAGt4qw) in Mumbai are his bicycles. He is one of the founders duo of WyoLum Emergents (http://www.wyolum.com/) – a global group of Open Hardware enthusiasts. Between all of his hobbies and cycling, he manages to discuss and create original Open Source circuit boards and projects. As a master of digital design, Anool is the driving force behind WyoLum projects. He is also the co-founder of Makers’ Asylum (http://www.makersasylum.com/) – one of India’s first community driven Maker Spaces. Anool is also a contributing writer for Hackaday (http://hackaday.com/about/) ! He lives in Mumbai with his wife – Samata (who is also an avid Maker) and son – Hearsh.

Who this workshop is for?

This workshop is tailored for the electronic enthusiast who has been breadboarding circuits but has never used an Electronic Design Automation (EDA) / computer aided design (CAD) program.

Looking to for the freedom to design any board size you wish and shed the design restrictions in other EDA/CAD programs like Eagle. Last class two middle school students were top of the class.

Why KiCad?

KiCad is an amazing Open Source (free as in freedom!) program that allows you to design your own printed circuit board without arbitrary limitations on board size. KiCad offers an all-in-one solution:

Full featured EDA suite, GNU GPL license

Cross-platform - Linux, Windows, Mac OSX

Initial release 1992 :-) extremely stable and mature

File formats - exports to many common formats like PS, SVG, Gerber, HPGL, DXF.

Large, dedicated support community.

What should I bring?

Please bring

a laptop - we will get KiCAD installed on your machine on Friday night.

A schematic of the circuit you’d like to turn into a PCB. This can be a hand drawn diagram.
