About us
NOVA Scribes is a free and open forum for visual practitioners to share their knowledge.
We are anyone who uses visuals to move others: consultants and facilitators who use visuals, graphic recorders, scribes, sketchnoters, and others!
We're all volunteers! Anyone who wants to can be an organizer or presenter.
The proceeds from the events go to:
• the presenters,
• charities that support the arts as a means of bridging people and communities such as the Whitethorne Foundation, which brings arts education to indigenous communities,
• honorariums for new graphic recorders to practice scribing our events, and
• scholarships to bring new attendees to events like the IFVP conference.
We have organized classes, graphic jams, open spaces, and webinars to share skills and learn from each other. We record our webinars for anyone to watch later, and if you're interested in presenting a topic, please let us know!
We organize our events using the Meetup app. You can find us at www.meetup.com/NOVA-Scribes
It's free to be a NOVA Scribes Member; please join us!

Doubling Down on DEI with Joe Gerstandt
·OnlineOnlineMany organizations today are retreating from diversity, equity, and inclusion work. But what if the real opportunity is to go deeper?
In this provocative and practical session, thought leader Joe Gerstandt invites facilitators, coaches, and organizational change professionals to reexamine what DEI really means—and what it has always meant. Joe argues that diversity is not an individual trait but something that exists between people, and that the true promise of DEI is its ability to benefit everyone, not just certain groups.
Drawing on years of experience teaching inclusive leadership and advising organizations across sectors, Joe will clarify key terms, dismantle common misconceptions, and offer language and frameworks that help professionals speak confidently and effectively about equity and inclusion in today’s polarized climate.
Participants will explore how to continue meaningful DEI work even in environments where the language itself has become politicized, and how to adapt the work to fit different organizational contexts without losing its core intent.
Whether you’re an experienced practitioner or simply ready to find your voice in this essential conversation, this workshop offers clarity, courage, and a renewed sense of purpose for leading with inclusion at the center.
joe gerstandt is a speaker, author and advisor bringing greater clarity, action, and impact to organizational diversity and inclusion efforts.
joe has worked with Fortune 100 corporations, small non-profits, government entities, and everything in between. He speaks at numerous conferences and summits, his insights have been published in Diversity Best Practices, Diversity Executive, HR Executive, numerous other print and on-line journals, and he co-authored the book Social Gravity: Harnessing the Natural Laws of Relationships.
joe grew up on a family farm in NW Iowa, served four years in the United States Marine Corps, including participation in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, attended Iowa State University, and then spent 6 years working in management and business development for technology and communication companies.
He then made a career change and went to work for a grassroots non-profit organization, and this is where he found himself drawn to issues related to diversity and inclusion and then became actively involved in that work.
A strong advocate for resetting the diversity and inclusion conversation, joe sees diversity and inclusion as poorly understood and often misunderstood. His keynote messages and interactive workshops bring greater clarity, action, and impact to existing and new organizational diversity & inclusion efforts.

·OnlineOnlineSpecial Effects of Lettering with Renatta Algalarrondo
A Hybrid NOVA Scribes Event
Join NOVA Scribes for a hands-on, hybrid lettering workshop with the incomparable Renatta Algalarrondo, known for her expressive titles, confident linework, and the subtle visual details that give her charts so much personality. This session will take place both in person at Brian’s Herndon studio and online for remote participants.
What the session covers
Renatta will walk participants through the building blocks of great lettering for graphic recording and facilitation. She will demo how she:
- Divides a chart and designs an overall structure
- Creates hierarchy through a main title, subheads, and stems that guide the viewer’s eye
- Combines lettering styles based on her own rules for what pairs well together
- Uses color accents like outlining pastel or yellow cursive
- Adds depth with hatching, shadows, and other simple special effects
This workshop is designed primarily for graphic recorders, but facilitators who create their own flip charts, workshop visuals, or meeting titles will also benefit from seeing how Renatta builds style, clarity, and visual interest.
The workshop will be a true hybrid experience. Renatta will demo live on the wall in Brian’s visual studio, which is fully equipped for multi-camera capture. Participants can join:
In person in Brian’s studio: email Brian@lizardbrain.com if you’d like to attend in person; I’ll include you on the calendar invite. 8 people max.
Online via Zoom, with a clear view of the demos and time to practice along
What to bring
For remote attendees, Renatta recommends three markers:
- A Neuland Big One
- A Neuland big Art marker
- A Neuland Fat One
- It’s OK if you don’t have those exact markers: use whatever you have on hand. You can practice on copy paper, manila paper, cardboard, or anything you already have.
In-person attendees will have access to studio markers and materials. All attendees will receive a discount on Neuland products including markers, ink, and other materials.
Who should attend
- Graphic recorders
- Visual facilitators
- Anyone who wants to improve the look and clarity of their lettering
Come experiment with lettering combinations, color effects, and styling techniques that make your charts pop. Whether you join from a studio chair or from home, you will leave with new tools for creating expressive and readable visual work.

In this Practitioner Process Talk, Nevada walks us through her practical approach to layout, palette building, and visual decision-making when the conversation is moving fast and the paper is blank.

Nevada will also offer a short working lesson on visual vocabulary with a focus on how she draws expressive people, and how she developed her own unique visual style.
