About us
NOVA Scribes is a free and open forum for visual practitioners to share their knowledge.
We are anyone who uses visuals to move others: consultants and facilitators who use visuals, graphic recorders, scribes, sketchnoters, and others!
Since 2016, we've held workshops, graphic jams, open spaces, and webinars to share skills and learn from each other. We record our webinars for anyone to watch later, and if you're interested in presenting a topic, please let us know!
We're all volunteers! Anyone who wants to can be an organizer or presenter.
NOVA Scribes has entered into a partnership with the IFVP: the International Forum of Visual Practitioners! This workshop is an IFVP Learning Lab. All IFVP members have access to Learning Labs at https://ifvpforum.circle.so/c/learning-hub/
Most of our online workshops are recorded and posted on YouTube for anyone who cannot attend. If you missed an event, you can find the YouTube link in the Comments section of this NOVA Scribes Meetup event.

We don't charge for most workshops, but we do ask for donations! Donations cover the costs of hosting events on Meetup, towards honorariums for new graphic recorders, towards scholarships to attend events like the IFVP conference, and towards direct donations to the IFVP.
If you'd like to attend an online workshop, be sure you are registered on Meetup! If your Zoom name doesn’t match your name on Meetup, you will not be admitted. (We’ve had Zoom bombers.)

Part 2: Make that language work at any size. (11 Nov)Join lettering artist and graphic recorder Heather Martinez and NOVA Scribes for a practical exploration of the Blackwing Foundation Lettering Series. This free series, designed for children, is the foundation for many of Heather’s other lettering offerings.
Designed specifically for visual practitioners, this session will look at the lettering modules through the lens of graphic recording and graphic facilitation. Heather will introduce the series and share ways the exercises and approaches can be translated into the work we do at the wall, on the page, and in the room.
Together we will letter using these foundational styles. We’ll look at ways to adapt and practice the material so that it strengthens both your everyday lettering and the range of styles available to you as a visual practitioner.
And if we have time, we’ll explore how lettering choices can support hierarchy, readability, rapid capture, and visual expression.
Think of this session as a guided introduction and a place to experiment together.

Part 2: Make that language work at any size. (11 Nov)In Part 1 of The Visual Practitioner’s Lettering Lab, we explored letterforms and techniques for strengthening our everyday lettering practice.
Now, we’re going to scale it up!
In this hands-on session for visual practitioners, we’ll take what we learned in Part 1 {LINK} and explore how lettering changes as we move from small-scale sketchnotes to large-scale wall charts.
Using Neuland markers, we’ll work with round, wedge, and brush nibs to explore how different tools affect letterform, weight, hierarchy, expression, and speed at different scales.
We’ll practice moving the same lettering ideas across formats, learning what needs to change, what can stay consistent, and how to choose the right marker for the job.
Bring your lettering practice off the page and onto the wall.And if we have time, we can talk about how all of this translates onto the iPad using just two brushes and some adjustments.
