What we’re about
NOVA Scribes is a free and open forum for visual practitioners to share their knowledge.
We are anyone who uses visuals to move others: consultants and facilitators who use visuals, graphic recorders, scribes, sketchnoters, and others!
We're all volunteers! Anyone who wants to can be an organizer or presenter.
The proceeds from the events go to:
• the presenters,
• charities that support the arts as a means of bridging people and communities such as the Whitethorne Foundation, which brings arts education to indigenous communities,
• honorariums for new graphic recorders to practice scribing our events, and
• scholarships to bring new attendees to events like the IFVP conference.
We have organized classes, graphic jams, open spaces, and webinars to share skills and learn from each other. We record our webinars for anyone to watch later, and if you're interested in presenting a topic, please let us know!
We organize our events using the Meetup app. You can find us at www.meetup.com/NOVA-Scribes
It's free to be a NOVA Scribes Member; please join us!

OnlineThe Power of Purpose: Facilitation for Ambiguity and Change
Facilitated by Rae Ringel
In times of complexity and rapid change, facilitation is the skill we need most. Join master facilitator Rae Ringel for an interactive NOVA Scribes session exploring why facilitation matters now—and how clarity of purpose can help you navigate any room with confidence.
Rae will guide participants through three levels of purpose:
- Personal purpose – How you show up as a facilitator. Are you playing to win or just playing not to lose?
- Purpose of facilitation – Why this practice is more vital now than ever before.
- Purpose in the room – How to design toward a clear North Star, and when to pivot in real time as energy shifts.
This workshop will be dynamic and participant-driven. Rae will invite attendees to choose topics in the moment, following the energy of the group. You’ll leave with practical tools for designing with purpose, responding to ambiguity, and reading the room with agility and presence.
ALSO: Rae will be revealing the inside story of the NEW facilitation certificate at UVA!
Rae Ringel is an executive coach, facilitator, and founder of The Ringel Group. She teaches facilitation and leadership at Georgetown University’s Institute for Transformational Leadership and the University of Virginia. Known for her engaging, experiential style, Rae helps groups and leaders thrive in complexity through purpose, design, and presence. She is also a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review.

•OnlineUncover What’s In Your Way: Group RIM (Regenerating Images in Memory)
OnlineUncover What’s In Your Way:
Group RIM (Regenerating Images in Memory) with Gráinne Sibley
Have you ever felt something holding you back but couldn’t quite name it?
Join NOVA Scribes for an experiential session exploring RIM (Regenerating Images in Memory), a gentle, guided process that helps surface and shift what’s keeping us from showing up fully as ourselves.
In this 90-minute workshop, Gráinne will guide participants through a Group RIM journey, a process where each person experiences their own internal journey. You’ll explore a theme that is relevant for you such as what’s getting in the way of being your authentic self or what’s keeping you from taking that next creative leap.
Following the guided experience, participants will have time to reflect, capture insights visually or in writing, and share their discoveries in small groups. As we hear one another’s reflections, we often find resonance and connection in unexpected places.
This isn’t a training on how to facilitate RIM; it’s an opportunity to experience it firsthand and reflect together as a community of visual thinkers, facilitators, and coaches.
What to Expect:
- Thought provoking personal reflection
- Space for quiet journaling or sketching
- Optional sharing and group conversation
- A welcoming, judgment-free space for self-discovery
Who it’s for:
Anyone curious about somatic, visual, or mindfulness-based approaches to facilitation, coaching, and personal growth. No experience needed. Just bring an open mind and something to write or draw with.
About the facilitator:
Gráinne Sibley: I design and deliver engagements to generate productive discomfort and drive creativity, strategy, and problem-solving for groups, teams, and individuals.
