NOVA Scribes is a free and open forum for visual practitioners to share their knowledge.
We are anyone who uses visuals to move others: consultants and facilitators who use visuals, graphic recorders, scribes, sketchnoters, and others!
Since 2016, we've held workshops, graphic jams, open spaces, and webinars to share skills and learn from each other. We record our webinars for anyone to watch later, and if you're interested in presenting a topic, please let us know!
We're all volunteers! Anyone who wants to can be an organizer or presenter.
NOVA Scribes has entered into a partnership with the IFVP: the International Forum of Visual Practitioners! This workshop is an IFVP Learning Lab. All IFVP members have access to Learning Labs at https://ifvpforum.circle.so/c/learning-hub/

We don't charge for most workshops, but we do ask for donations! Donations cover the costs of hosting events on Meetup, towards honorariums for new graphic recorders, towards scholarships to attend events like the IFVP conference, and towards direct donations to the IFVP.

Think With Ink™ - Lizard Brain’s visual facilitation workshop

Register at https://www.lizardbrain.com/thinkwithinkThink With Ink™ is Lizard Brain’s 3-day premiere graphic facilitation workshop. This is an intensive workshop that covers the essentials of using visuals to facilitate a group process.
The workshop covers three areas:
- Technique: Markers, paper handling, color use, lettering, drawing, forms, levels of information, listening for synthesis.
- Models, Methods, and Tools: visual energizers and icebreakers, meeting principles and ground rules, and visual tools for brainstorming ideas, comparing ideas, and collaboratively deciding the way forward.
- Experiential Practice: hands-on practice designing and leading facilitated modalities.
This workshop is meant for:
- The facilitator who wants to build a repertoire of visual tools,
- The graphic recorder or sketchnoter who wants to expand into graphic facilitation,
- The team member who wants to bring visual, participatory methods to the team,
- The consultant and coach who wants to help clients think through problems in a visual manner, or
- The visual thinker, the whiteboard salesman, the data visualizer, or anyone that sits in the intersection of visuals and helping others solve problems.
Each participant will receive:
- Textbook
- Sketchbook and sketchnoting materials
- Handouts summarizing key practices
- Set of markers
- Roll of twenty-five-yard paper
- This hands-on, practice-driven workshop will give you everything you need to graphically facilitate groups through the toughest challenges.

- Will this teach me to graphic record?
- Graphic recording is large-scale visual notetaking for groups. Graphic facilitation is using visuals to help move a group through a process. Although you can apply many of the graphic facilitation methods in Think With Ink to graphic recording, we will focus on visual group processes rather than on the aesthetic side of graphic recording.

Guerilla Scribing with Fry
·OnlineOnlineWhat happens when you take the skills of graphic recording and visual facilitation out of the workshop room and into everyday life?
In this interactive NOVA Scribes session, Fry will introduce the concept of Guerrilla Scribing: using visual listening, sense-making, and real-time drawing in informal, unexpected, and deeply human situations. Think beyond conferences and strategy sessions. What might scribing look like during a difficult conversation, a first date, a family gathering, a conflict between friends, or even while watching reality TV?Together, we'll explore how the tools we use as facilitators and visual practitioners can become everyday life skills. Through examples, discussion, and hands-on practice, you'll experiment with capturing conversations, relationships, emotions, and dynamics as they unfold in real time.
This workshop will include:
- Examples of Guerrilla Scribing in action
- A breakdown of the principles and process behind the practice
- A live demonstration
- A participatory drawing exercise
- Group discussion and Q&A
Whether you're a graphic recorder, sketchnoter, facilitator, coach, or simply someone curious about bringing more intentionality and understanding into your daily interactions, this session will offer a fresh perspective on what it means to truly listen with a pen.
Fry (she/they) is a graphic recorder, illustrator, and educator who believes images are a powerful tool for creating positive change. Her interest in visual work is founded in an appreciation for deeper levels of listening, cultivating new mindsets, and allowing space for people to be creative. Fry’s work as an artist extends into the culture of zine making; she has received two grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council to produce publications focused on mental health awareness. She is also passionate about public art and can be found sitting inside her creations Selfie Bot or Ventomatic.
