Raising Future Scribes: Helping Young People Find Their Visual Voice & Creative Confidence

How did you find your visual practice? Or how did it find you?
Many of us find our visual practice later in life, often by accident. What if we intentionally nurture it earlier? What might happen then?
This session contemplates how we can kindle visual thinking and creative confidence in younger generations—whether as parents, educators, mentors or practitioners. Together, we will reflect on how visual expression forms part of identity, how environments shape creative confidence and how we can support young people in using visuals as a way of thinking, communicating, expressing and meaning making. We'll close with practical approaches for encouraging visual practice in everyday settings for the young and young at heart.

Learning Objectives

  • Observe how our own relationship to creativity shapes how we encourage it in younger people
  • Explore ways to frame visual expression as a form of thinking, not just artistic skill
  • Identify small, everyday practices that help young people build confidence in expressing ideas visually
  • Leave with language and approaches that nurture [visual] curiosity in the next generation
