A LOOK AT A BASIC OUTLINE/SYNOPSIS

Details

This meetup is the next step in the novel writing process. We've gone over loglines and queries; now it's time to tackle the outline/synopsis, the most critical step that guides us through this entire process.

The chart above asserts that a writer can complete a book in one year by following the steps delineated in the above graph. This is very possible, but one has to START the writing process in order to produce a book.

We are serious about getting all of our members to write that "best selling," novel they've been pondering for God knows how long and no we do not have catchy name phrases like, "Close your mouth, open your laptop and write the gosh darn book already," in our title. We're also not some pretentious group that puts you through a vetting or initiation process where you have to sign your name in blood to become a member. I'm just sharing with you what years of experience and education (both self and formal) has taught me. I'm, essentially, giving you the cheat codes so that you can get your novel done quickly without having to put yourself through the rigorous task of learning from every single writer's mistake known to mankind. Disclaimer: I'm not purporting to be the "Holier than thou," author, either. I learn a lot from members. We all benefit and learn from each other. No matter how much you think you know, there is ALWAYS room to learn more.

So here it is: Before you put fingers to keyboard, you should be able to answer the following questions:

  1. Who is your protagonist? (Who is the story about?)

  2. What major event has happened to disrupt the normal day to day things in this character's life? (The inciting Incident)

  3. What action does he/she need to take as a result of being prompted by this incident?

  4. Who or what is standing in his/her way? (antagonist)

Obstacle # 1?
Obstacle # 2?
Obstacle # 3?

CLIMAX: (The point in the story that forces the outcome--good or bad)

TURNING POINT: Does he/she get what he/she wants?

What is your theme? What lesson can a reader take away from your story?

If you're able to answer these questions by our next meetup, congratulations, you've got yourself a complete story.

Until then, WRITE ON!✌
