Numenta HTM Challenge Onsite

The Numenta HTM Challenge is an online coding contest encouraging the creation of Hierarchical Temporal Memory applications.

This Meetup page is for those interested in attending the Onsite event that ends the challenge. The morning of this event will contain educational presentations from Numenta (defined below). In the afternoon, all HTM Challenge demo videos will be viewed by a live audience and judging panel.

After each demo video the judging panel will discuss the submission, and those who submitted the project will have a chance to take questions from judges.

Temporal Memory of HTM: A Retrospective (Subutai Ahmad)

Did you realize that the development of HTM algorithms at Numenta has been going on for over 10 years? Subutai (who has seen it all) will step you through the sequence of HTM developments, from our very first demos, algorithms and products, to our current research on cortical algorithms. Come and see what we have learned, and how our past informs our future.

What are the Hard Unsolved Problems in HTMs? (Jeff Hawkins)

JUDGING 1PM - 4:30PM (?)

HTM Challenge submission demonstration videos will be reviewed on the big screen by the live audience and judging panel in the afternoon. See information about the Challenge Judging Panel at

What I found most unexpected was Jeff's discussion regarding how hard it was to sell the predictive analytics aspect to other businesses, even though it made great business sense, was backed up by research, developed by a team having the credentials and an established track record, and would take a decade to get a business to incorporate this technology.
Sort of goes against the grain of thinking that if you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your doorstep. Not too surprising as such, but a caution against naivete in one's perceptions in how fast the world will adapt this. There is definitely a sense that this is "voodoo science" among the business community, especially once you start uttering the phrase "Brain algorithm inspired technology". If anything, there is a strong temptation in business to avoid being an early adapter on unvetted tech and just buy it from established big vendor.

The HTM Challenge was a fantastic event. It was a great mix of presentations in the beginning followed by an interesting set of demos from all over the globe. The event was well organised with ample time for networking and getting to know other HTM Community members.

    Hello Matt.

Unfortunately I will not be able to make it to the morning session. I will definitely be at the afternoon demo 1pm - 4:30 pm session. I am very sorry, I hope you can still help me out on the install of the nupic if possible. Obiously I know you will be extremely busy giving your function at Numenta tomorrow. If it is an issue, please do not worry about it. I can stay after 4:30 pm if need be of course. See you in the afternoon!

Cannot wait! ** Is there any chance someone could be kind enough in helping me install Nupic if I bring my macbook (Yosemite)? I will love to start playing with Nupic but I am very confused with all the dependencies! Not sure they will be enough time but I thought I will ask :)
