Laurel Hill and the Old Lorton Prison (Rating: C)

This is an easy 7 mile C hike that includes 1.6 miles on dirt trails (which could be muddy after rain), but the rest is on neighborhood streets or paved trails with little elevation gain. The hike begins at the new Laurel Hill Park Central Green in Lorton. The Central Green links to the Jerry Connolly Cross County Trail.

We will take the Cross County Trail, via the Giles Run Meadow Trail, to the Revolutionary War Patriot William Lindsay's 1790 estate Laurel Hill. Then we'll continue through the Liberty at the Laurel Hill complex which is located on a large chunk of the Old Lorton Prison complex.

After seeing much of the Liberty, we will continue on the paved CCT walking in the woods and along stream beds. There is one stream crossing with large stepping stones. If water is not too high, we will continue a little further and turn around when the CCT reaches Pohick Road. We'll have a snack break and then return to our starting point.

Directions: From I-95 South, exit 163. At the end of the exit ramp take a right onto Lorton Rd. Go 1.4 miles to the light at Lorton and Workhouse Rd. Turn right at the light and take the first right to the Center Green parking lot.
