Description
We will spend the Labor Day weekend exploring a charming and iconic place - Quebec City. It is truly one of a kind and has jealously maintained its French heritage.
On Saturday morning we will fly to Montreal (cheaper), rent a car, and drive four hours to Quebec City. Saturday evening, we will start exploring the old city and find a suitable place to dine.
Sunday will be spent hiking through the old city, exploring Chateau Frontenac, Dufferin Terrace, the ramparts, Petit-Champlain, and other attractions. Sunday evening will be time to shop and relax, followed by dinner.
Monday, time permitting, we will visit the Montmorency waterfalls before driving back to Montreal. As a bonus, we will spend a couple of hours exploring Montreal before heading to the airport to catch an evening flight back to the DC area.
Language Alert
In Quebec, both the city and the province, "il faut parler Francais", so unless you speak French, download your favorite translation app on your smart phone.
Passport
You must have a valid (not expired) passport to travel to Canada. If you are a US citizen, you will not need a visa.
Logistics
When you make your flight reservations ideally you should plan to reach Montreal by 10 am Saturday so that you will have enough time to rent a car, drive to Quebec, check in, rest, and join the rest of the group to explore the city in the evening.
Likewise, you should plan on departing Montreal for DC on Monday no earlier than 7 p.m. to make sure that there is enough time for you to check out in Quebec, drive to Montreal, join the group for the bonus Montreal exploration, and drive to the airport in time.
It may be possible to participate selectively in some the Club events as long as your plans do not affect those of the group.
Flights
The group is making the following flight reservations:
Departure: August 30, 2025
Depart DCA (Reagan) at 0600 by Air Canada, arrive in Montreal at 0745
Return: September 1, 2025
Depart Montreal at 2000 by Air Canada, arriving in DCA at 2148
Cost, as of July 3: About $540. We found the flights using Porter Airlines.
Carpools
We strongly recommend that you join/form a carpool before making your reservations so that you avoid issues such as members of a carpool arriving/departing at uncoordinated times and staying far apart. Expenses (rental, insurance, gas, tolls, and parking) to be shared among members in the carpool per their preference/agreement. Neither the Club nor the hike leaders are responsible for coordinating transportation. Hikers are not guaranteed to get a ride from the carpool location. Carpooling is organized by the participants, and they participate at their own risk.
Overnight Stays
Coordinate with your carpool to find accommodations that best suit your preferences and budget. Closer to the city center the better.
