Join me in exploring the forests and terrain of Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, a hidden gem in Fairfax county. This is a 6 mile hike along various trails in the Scott's Run Nature Preserve including the Potomac Heritage Trail, with an elevation gain of ~900'. We will view the main Scott's Run waterfall, and the smaller Stubblefield Falls overlook. We'll also see the ruins of the Burling Cabin, once owned by Edward D. Burling, who lived on the property from the 1920's - 1960's. Scott's Run is also noted for its rare Eastern Hemlock trees. There will be picturesque forests and sweeping views of the Potomac River.
Some maneuvering on and around rocks is required. There are two stream crossings on concrete pylons. Hiking poles if you use them, and sturdy waterproof hiking shoes/boots are recommended. Elevation consists mostly of rolling terrain. There is one short but steep climb up an embankment. This will be an invigorating hike!
The hike: 6 miles along winding dirt trails, with some roots and rocks, with ~900 ft. elevation gain. Pace will be 2.5 miles per hour while moving, slower uphill, with stops to view the falls and Potomac River. Some trails will be muddy after the recent rains, but the water crossings should be passable. Please ensure you are comfortable with hikes of this distance, pace, and elevation gain. Where to meet: At the Scott’s Run parking lot about .7 miles west of Beltway exit 44 (Rt. 193-Georgetown Pike). It’s the large parking area furthest from the Beltway, across from Swink's Mill Rd. There's also a small parking area closer to the Beltway. This is not where we are meeting. Continue another .5 miles west (away from the Beltway) on Georgetown Pike to the large lot. I'll be in a red Tesla with the hatch open. Please arrive by 8:45AM so we can get everyone signed in and begin the hike on time at 9AM.
Note: The Beltway is under construction from Tyson’s to the Maryland State Line. Backups on the Beltway and Georgetown Pike Eastbound are common in the morning. Please monitor the traffic conditions on the day of the hike and plan accordingly in order to arrive by 8:45AM. Traffic conditions can change quickly in the morning rush hour.
