Route: The Nicholson Hollow Trail is an 9 mile out and back hike with 1,200 feet of elevation gain. The hiking pace will be between 2.0 – 2.5 MPH (Moderate)
The trail is well maintained and follows the Hughes River for the entire hike ending at Corbin Cabin where we can have lunch by the Hughes River. There are multiple stream crossings during the hike including crossing the Hughes River and Brokenback Run at the beginning of the hike.
There are 4 stream crossings in each direction in which you step from one big rock to another. Depending on the conditions, fording may be difficult at times, but we won’t know for sure until near or on the day of the hike. We will regroup at all trail intersections and stream crossings.
Carpools: Meet at the University Blvd Park and Ride at GPS coordinates: 38.80136, -77.59032 by 7:45 AM which is across from the new Sheetz store located at 7201 New Stable Way. The meetup location can be accessed via Route 29. Please note that the carpool meetup location is across from the Sheetz store, it is not at the Sheetz location itself.
The leader will be at the carpool location but neither the Club nor the hike leaders are responsible for coordinating transportation to/from the trailhead. Hikers are not guaranteed to get a ride to the trailhead from the carpool location. Carpooling is organized by the participants and they participate at their own risk.
It can be an hour and 20-minute driving time from the University lot to the Old Rag parking lot.
Carpool fee: Suggested carpool fee is $6.
Trail Meetup: The group will meet up at 9:15 AM next to the Ranger station at the Old Rag parking lot at GPS coordinates 38.570943, -78.293544. There is a vault toilet next to the ranger station.
Park Entrance fee: $30.00 or free with one of the various National Park Passes.
Dogs: Dogs are permitted on this hike in accordance with the NVHC Dog Policy. However, please note that dogs may find it difficult to traverse some of the stream crossings. https://tinyurl.com/nvhcdogpolicy
