Carderock-Billy Goat C Trail-Great Falls Tavern, MD (Rating: B)

MEETING PLACE: The hike will begin at 8:30 am at the North Carderocks Parking (Lot D), the one used for Carderock Cliffs. After entering the park from the Clara Barton Parkway, you will drive under the C&O Canal. Then turn right and proceed to the parking lot at the far end (Lot D). There are restrooms available. Plus, restrooms are available at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center, the halfway point.

HIKE SUMMARY: This is a 10.5-mile hike with ~400' elevation gain along the Billy Goat C Trail and the C&O Towpath. We begin on the Billy Goat C trail, which is 1.6 miles long and is considered the easiest of the three Billy Goat trails. Nonetheless, there are a couple of small stream crossings that require caution.

After that, we will hike along the C&O Canal Towpath toward Great Falls Tavern Park, Maryland. We will stop for a snack break at the Visitors Center, which includes a restroom. On the return to the parking lot, we will stop at the Olmstead Island Overlook, which provides excellent views of the Potomac River and the overall Great Falls Gorge. We then return to the parking lot.

We hike at an average pace of 2.5 mph while moving.

Dogs are NOT permitted on this hike.
