Join me for a hike to the "dead drop" bridge where FBI double agent Robert Hanssen hid information for the Soviet Union for more than 20 years. This spot is also where he was arrested in February 2001. His espionage is considered one of the worst in US history. We'll also walk the path he took to his former home, where FBI agents conducted surveillance from across the street (much like the TV show 'The Americans'). After being sent to a CO federal prison for life, he died in 2023. We'll also pass by the FBI Terrorist Screening Center. Established after 9/11, the TSC consolidates information across government and other law enforcement agencies to keep us safe. We'll go through several lesser-known parks including Wildwood, Foxstone and Northside as well as the W&OD Trail. We'll also pass a former Civil War Hospital, now Freeman Store. Please note that most of this hike is on pavement, including park trails and neighborhood sidewalks.
For those who are interested, we'll meet for lunch after the hike, most likely Bear Branch Tavern.
