Description:
Rise and shine, astronomy lovers - a Total Lunar Eclipse is happening on March 3rd! Come on out to Mason Neck State Park, for one of nature’s most breathtaking celestial events - a Blood Moon.
During this rare phenomenon, the Moon will glide through Earth’s shadow, transforming from its familiar silver glow into a deep, coppery red. The eclipse will reach its peak in the early morning hours, offering an unforgettable view. What better way to kick off your day?
The park gates will open early this morning to view the eclipse from the Visitor Center's back patio. Interpreters will be available to share information about the eclipse.
The next Total Lunar Eclipse won't occur again until January 2028.
There are restrooms at the main picnic area as well as at the Visitor Center which is near where we gather for the viewing.
After the eclipse, for those interested, we can do a short hike of about 3-4 miles, then go get some breakfast. I'll be hungry and in need of some coffee! Breakfast location TBD
