Rapidan Camp/Camp Hoover (Rating: B)

Description:
A very nice hike in Shenandoah National Park, to the iconic Camp Rapidan (a.k.a. Camp Hoover) President Hoover's brown house & summer mountain retreat.

We will hike starting at the Milam Gap parking area and head south on the AT to the summit of Hazeltop Mountain and view of the Shenandoah Valley. We will continue south to Laurel Prong trail to Cat Knob and then down to Camp Rapidan. We will stop for lunch at The Brown House (this place is brown not white), Hoover's Summer Camp with some time to look around and enjoy the sites. Finally we will begin our return to the parking lot via the Mill Prong trail crossing to look at the small but pretty Big Rock Falls.

Bring adequate water/hydration, snacks/lunch, and sturdy hiking shoes since there are some rocky areas, tree roots, and potential wet spots. Hiking poles are helpful if you usually hike with them. There are several stream crossings. We’ll hike rain or shine.

Rating: B - moderately difficult
This hike is 8¾ miles with an elevation gain of 1600 ft.

Pace: ~2.5 mph. Hiking time about 4 hours

Carpools: The leader will be at Milam Gap. If you want to carpool it's a 1hr 50min drive from Centerville Park & Ride, suggest you leave there by 7:00 AM to reach the trailhead 10min early to check in and be ready to hike at 9:00a.

Plan to be at Milam Gap by 8:50am so we can start the hike at 9am. Milam Gap is between mile marker 52 & 53 on Sky Line Drive , GPS: 38.5003, -78.4456.
