Veterans Day in the United States is observed annually on November 11. The holiday was originally established as Armistice Day in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson to mark the end of World War I.
In 1954, Congress and President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed the holiday to Veterans Day to honor all American military veterans who served in any war or conflict, living or deceased.
Memorial Day, on the other hand, honors service members who died while serving in the military.
