About us
Northwest Phoenix Humanists (NWPH) is an inclusive group of freethinkers formally affiliated with the American Humanist Association, American Atheists, and Secular AZ. We also collaborate closely with UU Humanist Association.
We are non-theists who are good without gods.
Empathy tells us what's right; science tells us what's true.
Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism or other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good. Click here for more information.
The main belief of Humanism is that people are capable of living ethical lives without belief in a god. Humanists believe that human morality develops through common human experiences and is not “given” by a higher power. In other words, we believe that goodness is internal rather than external. The idea of a god – especially a god that tells people how to be good – isn’t really compatible with this idea.
Am I a Humanist? If you're a non-theist aligned with Humanist values, this group is for you! Examples:
- freethinker
- secular Unitarian Universalist, secular Jew, secular Buddhist or culturally religious
- Humanist (what's that?)
- agnostic
- atheist
- Religious Naturalist
This group generally meets in the North and West Valley. If you're looking for a group that meets in the other parts of the Phoenix Valley, please check out Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix (HSGP).
The reasons for starting this local group are:
- To promote a progressive society in the Northwest Valley where being good without a god is an accepted and respected way to live life in Arizona--an inclusive community of like-minded individuals from all walks of life and age groups
- To provide Humanist events in the North and West sides of Greater Phoenix (social, educational, social justice events and more)
- To provide a Humanist presence in interfaith activities when those events are based on shared values
