AGENDA:

Extending Cloudera Manager: Managing Your 3rd-Party Systems Alongside Your CDH Cluster , presented by Kostas Sakellis, Sr. Software Engineer

The Cloudera Manager Extension framework has introduced the ability for users to write plugins that can manage and monitor their distributed systems that run with CDH - ranging from home-brewed systems to enterprise offerings. Managing these systems can be challenging especially in elastic clusters. By utilizing parcels and custom service descriptors (CSDs), users can integrate the management of their software in Cloudera Manager and offer to their administrators a consistent management experience for their entire cluster.

In this talk, we’ll start by discussing common issues with managing co-located distributed systems with CDH. Next, we will describe the various types of extensions that can be written for Cloudera Manager with an emphasis on parcels and CSDs. The talk will finish by demoing third party services taking advantage of this extensibility framework.

Lessons Learned and Best Practices for Running Hadoop in AWS, presented by Amandeep Khurana, Principal Solutions Architect

Enterprises are starting to deploy large scale Hadoop clusters to extract value out of the data that they are generating. These clusters often span 100s of nodes. To speed up the time to value, a lot of the newer deployments are happening in AWS, moving from the traditional on-premise bare metal world.

In this session, we'll share the lessons learned and best practices for deploying multi-tenant Hadoop clusters in AWS. We'll cover what reference deployments look like, what services are relevant for Hadoop deployments, network configurations, instance types, backup and disaster recovery considerations, security considerations. We’ll also talk about what works well, what doesn’t and what we have to do going forward to improve the operability of Hadoop in AWS.
