The Bhagavad Gita is one of the foundational texts of Indian philosophy and spirituality. Presented as a dialogue between the warrior Arjuna and Krishna, it begins with Arjuna’s profound moral and existential crisis on the eve of battle. Unable to reconcile his personal attachments with his responsibilities, Arjuna asks how one can act rightly when every choice involves suffering and conflict.

In this three-part discussion, we will explore key ideas and concepts in the Gita, including dharma, karma, the gunas (sattva, rajas, and tamas), and the different paths of yoga—including karma yoga, jnana yoga, dhyana yoga, and bhakti yoga.

We will also consider the Gita’s perspectives on the Self, consciousness, attachment, action, devotion, and liberation.

The Gita came up naturally during our discussion of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, particularly because both works use a teacher’s wisdom to address fundamental questions about how we should live.

Exploring the two texts together can open a broader conversation about spirituality, ethics, suffering, love, freedom, and human purpose.

No prior knowledge of Indian philosophy is required.

Beginners and those already familiar with Indian philosophy are equally welcome.
