What we’re about
MISSION
Western Civilization is in the bewildering predicament of having the Judeo-Christian beliefs that gave rise to its individualism and scientific ethos seemingly undermined by its own crowning achievements in scientific discovery. Though we now see that the prehuman past and the universe beyond our world dwarf our greatest human stories in extreme physical scale, it is at our peril that we abandon those stories in awe of nature’s seeming indifference. The beliefs encoded in them were learned in the gauntlet of premodern history, a violent mire out of which our ancestors lifted our world in pursuit of divinity, and to which we are capable of myopically returning.
The mission of this group is to look honestly at the material reality revealed in science and at the divine truths revealed in life's tribulations, and to probe the mystery of their coexistence for glimpses of a way of understanding both coherently, a way that both is in agreement with natural cosmology and points to the divine truth within it that can guide us in the darkest of circumstances. Perhaps it is best sought together!
Everyone is welcome, so long as you come with the curiosity to find answers in other people's insights, the humility to consider criticism openly, and the respect for your own beliefs to defend them forthrightly and civilly. Whether you're atheist, agnostic, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, or otherwise, we want to hear from you! Whether you know about physics, biology, history, business, AI, something else, or just a lot of life experience, we need your insight! Whichever side of the mountain you're on, it's an uphill climb to the peak. Synthesis toward the truth is the goal.
IN PRACTICE
This is my first time organizing a meetup, so bear with me! For now, I am imagining this will be a very open ended discussion held at an inexpensive restaurant every few weeks, where we'll exchange ideas about science and the divine. Perhaps, for those like myself without a traditional religious community, it could additionally function a bit like communion, an opportunity to talk about life, self reflect, and strengthen each other.
