Introducing Akka

Typesafe CTO Jonas Bonér is dropping in on ny-scala to tell us about the project he founded, Akka:

We believe that one should never have to choose between productivity and scalability, which has been the case with traditional approaches to concurrency and distribution. The cause of that has been the wrong tools and the wrong layer of abstraction and Akka is here to change that. Akka is a unified runtime and programming model for scaling both UP (utilizing multi-core processors) and OUT (utilizing the grid/cloud). With Akka this will be taken to a whole new level with its “Distributed by Design”. Akka provides location transparency by abstracting away both these tangents of scalability by turning them into an operations and configuration task. This gives the Akka runtime freedom to do adaptive automatic load-balancing, cluster rebalancing, replication and partitioning.

Akka is available at (under Apache 2 license).

Excellent talk - good overview of concepts and next steps. Thanks much to Jonas for fielding all those questions - hope to dive into more details through documentation and forums.

*Understandably* rushed given the amount of stuff to go over.

Agreed.. Google Hangouts would be great, but if someone has a Mac they can record it as well.

    Hi all,

Is there room for more than the listed 100? I'd love to come, but only made it onto the waitlist.

BTW - hopefully relevant to this community - "Akka in Action" (from Manning books) is 50% off till Friday if you use the code "akkalaunch50a". Nothing beats reading documentation, but since this is a MEAP (early release program) it is likely to evolve with recent updates, and is an opportunity to contribute to the conversation.

Will there be video or slides posted afterward?

      I haven't got a flipcam :(

If the meetup is open to it, one option may be to run a Google+ Hangout for the duration of the talk -- videos get recorded and archived on YouTube directly. Anyone with a Mac or webcam-enabled PC could do this. I have to head out a little early to else I'd volunteer.

I can bring a camera and record until the battery runs out... No charger

Disappointed that I can't make it. Thanks for putting this together Nathan - looks great!

Sounds like a great talk. Too bad it is on Yom Kippur. Would be great if someone could videotape.
