Computer security often seems like an endless source of bad news; between data breaches, high-profile hacks, and disinformation campaigns, it’s easy to think that there’s little you can do to protect yourself from hackers and cyber thieves . However, familiarity with a core set of proven concepts and tools can make a BIG difference when it comes to defending yourself online.

This presentation will go beyond common advice (such as “Use stronger passwords!”) to explore these core concepts, including common security misconceptions, the practice of threat modelling, useful tools and rules of thumb for defensive computing. Patrick Smyth will focus on practical web browser and operating system security, especially (but not only) on the Microsoft Windows platform. No previous knowledge of computer security is required.

Security expert Patrick Smyth is currently a developer on the NEH-funded DH box, a cloud-based platform for accessing digital humanities tools.
