May Meetup: A joint meetup with NYC-GDG!

Details

This month, we'll be partnering up with the GDG-NY meetup (https://www.meetup.com/NYC-GDG/) for a special joint May meetup at Google!

Doors open 6:30pm, welcome at 7pm.

Speakers
“Offline maps” - Apoorv Kothari
Google Maps for Android has come a long way but we all make the kind assumption that our users have a fluid LTE connection. In reality there are 3 scenarios when trying to view google maps. Google maps has magically cached the area that you are interested in. The scary version, where you just see a vast sea of gray. Or we can take control and provide our users with an offline option that allows them to view their location even in the darkest subways.

“Do I really have to watch that video?” - Chris Doyle
Playing videos in a service to enable backgrounding of the video and extending the lifecycle of it beyond that of a single activity.

Lightning talks
"RxJava and Groovy" - Mohit Pandey
Our emphasis on reactive programming using RxJava and Groovy allowed us to gain power and expressiveness with very few lines of code while still supporting forward compatibility with Java 8.

“What’s new in Google Play Services” - Dario
New APIs for Android Wear, Google Fit, Location and more. Focusing primarily on the new goodies for Android Wear for this lightning talk.

“VR Map Explorer” - Timothy Fagan & Arcadius Kazimierski
Members of the Skylight1 team who competed at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon last weekend (team won $5K) discuss their Android app entry.

Thanks to Dario, GDG-NY and Google for coordinating with us!
