June: Kotlin 101, Immutables Library, and Backend Driven Native UIs

Details

We'll be back at Spotify for our June meetup! RSVPs are now open (we open RSVPs two weeks before every meetup).

Talks:

>> Kotlin 101, by Daniel Nizri, Yodle
This talk would be an intro to some of the language features and why it is interesting for Android.

  • Kotlin language features (lambdas, null safety, extension methods, data classes, etc.)
  • Kotlin Android Extensions (synthetic properties)
  • Comparison to other languages (Java, Scala)
  • Getting started (Android Studio, Gradle)
  • Example project on Github (dagger, retrofit, rx, unit testing)

>> The Immutables Library, by Brian Plummer, The New York Times
This open source library uses annotation processing to provide builders for your objects to make them immutable. This library works well with gson and it's easy to setup an immutable data model for your application.

>> Backend Driven Native UIs, by Diego Cristina Capelo, Spotify
"What if we changed this list to a grid?" It sounds simple enough, right? It turns out it isn't quite as simple as it seems. What if we could make it easier? Even more, what if we could build an entire feature from the backend, without a client release?

Many thanks to Spotify for venue, pizza & drinks, and Carl & Chris for coordinating!
