Gather around Android Devs, we're coming together from around to world to hang out and learn some interesting Android things. In the spirit of being inclusive, we've broken this event into three mini-events, each of which caters to specific time zones.
What is Android Worldwide? It's an international group of developer communities coming together to make a joint impact. We organize free worldwide upskilling and social events for Android devs, scheduled to happen at least once every three months.
For help with decoding what time the events are in your own time zone, we've found TimeAndDate.com to be super helpful.
Event #2 (12AM CEST / 6PM EDT / 3PM PDT) by Michael Yotive, Co-organizer of GDG Android Columbus
Schedule (EDT):
6:00PM: Socializing
6:30PM: Falsehoods Android Developers Believe About Lifecycles by Andrew Bailey
7:30PM: More socializing
Presentation details:
Lifecycles are what drive your Android apps, but developers often overlook edge cases that lead to lost user inputs and mysterious crashes. This talk will focus on assumptions that you might be making in your Activities and Fragments, where those assumptions fall apart, and what you should do to avoid deviously subtle lifecycle-related issues in your apps. These are details that trip up both junior and experienced developers, so regardless of your experience, this talk will bring a new perspective to how you think about lifecycles.
Participating communities:
GDG Android Columbus, GDG Bronx, GDG Capital Region, GDG Córdoba Argentina, GDG NYC, GDG Washington DC, DC Android, DC Droids, GDG Miami, GDG Montreal, GDG Toronto Android, GDG Houston
Event #3 (3AM CEST / 9PM EDT / 6PM PDT) by Siena Aguayo, Co-Organizer of GDG LA Android , and James Henderson, Co-Organizer of GDG Silicon Beach
Schedule (PDT):
6:00PM: Socializing
6:30PM: Conquering Common Conundrums with ConstraintLayout by Huyen Tue Dao
7:00PM: Break
7:15PM: Halving the Crash Rate of the Airbnb App by Andreas Rossbacher
7:45PM: More socializing
Presentation details:
Talk #1: ConstraintLayout was announced at Google I/O 2016, but even after 4 years of improvements, additions, and fixes, it can still be a little daunting to get started. Even if you've been using it for a while, the sheer volume of functionality and possibility can be overwhelming. You might have a nagging feeling that you are not using ConstraintLayout in "the right away" or at least not to its full potential.
In this session, we're going to look at common layout problems and questions, and then start solving them with ConstraintLayout, exploring why and when we might choose some features and functionality over others and building a basic set of tools and techniques. Hopefully, after this talk, ConstraintLayout will feel less overwhelming with a fundamental toolset upon which you can build as you conquer increasingly complex layouts.
Talk #2: Halving the Crash Rate of the Airbnb App by Andreas Rossbacher: How we tracked down a native crash in the Skia graphics subsystem to halve the crash rate of the Airbnb Android app.
Participating communities:
GDG LA Android, GDG Silicon Beach, GDG Cloud Edmonton, Denver Droids
