Cherry Blossom, Museum & historical Tour of Flushing Meadow Corona Park
Details
### A Visit to the "New" Flushing Meadows-Corona Park
Please accept my apologies, but I’ve had to rewrite the description for our upcoming walk. Have you ever felt like you walked straight into The Twilight Zone? That is how I felt today while prepping for our Saturday tour. The changes to the park are dramatic, and I want to ensure you know what to expect.
The Walk: Past vs. Present We will explore the park as it stands today, but our conversation will be rooted in its deep history. We’ll discuss how F. Scott Fitzgerald described this land in The Great Gatsby, the massive vision Robert Moses held for the 1939-40 World’s Fair, and the wonders of the 1964-65 World’s Fair.
We will look at what remains, discuss what has vanished, and I’m eager to hear your ideas on what should be done to preserve the remaining vintage architecture.
The Queens Museum We will end our walk at the museum, which currently features several fascinating new exhibits:
- "So This Is America" and "About Us: The American Imaginary"
- "Tiffany Glass: Lighting Luxury"
- The Panorama: The famous miniature scale model of New York City.
The Beauty of the Day Despite the changes to the landscape, the Cherry Blossoms around the Unisphere were absolutely beautiful today. The weather is expected to be great, and I hope you will join me to witness "what was and what is."
I apologize for this late change in the description, but I promise we will have a meaningful and fun afternoon of discovery.
Admission to Queens Museum:
- Adults: $8.00
- Seniors: $6.00
NY State Residents: Pay what you wish - Transportation: #7 train to Mets/Willet stop
- Meeting Place: by the token booth - I'll have a MeetUp sign
- Meeting Time: 1:00pm
- Organizer fee: $10.00
P.S. The last time I led this walk was before the pandemic, and this will be my final time conducting it. If anyone is interested in the presentation materials after we finish, please feel free to ask. I have made copies of many interesting that were here. This will be a moderate-to-slow-paced walk; our goal is to truly see and enjoy the beauty of the park and the afternoon together.
