Enhancing Collaboration Through Innovation - A Multidisciplinary Approach to Engineering

Thornton Tomasetti is an internationally recognized engineering company, with a long history in advanced delivery methods and digital fabrication. The Advanced Computational Modeling (ACM) team at Thornton Tomasetti works at the forefront of advanced practices in the AEC industry. By combining advanced modeling techniques, app development related to new BIM workflows and software interoperability, and with a strong link to R&D and academia, the team ties together the firm’s multiple disciplines, which include structural engineering, façade design, sustainability consulting and construction support. Over the past years, the ACM team developed new means through which buildings can be holistically informed by these multiple disciplines in parallel.
This presentation by Robert Otani and Jonatan Schumacher’s will showcase our latest project related to building design and research. We will explore new methods to help enhance the communication process from conceptual design to fabrication, and showcase how tools such as Revit can be integrated into the design-delivery process at all stages of the project.

Speakers:
Robert K. Otani
Robert K. Otani has more than 17 years of structural design experience involving commercial, sports, institutional, aviation and cultural projects. Rob has worked on many complex structures and as Special Structures Leader at Thornton Tomasetti, is specifically interested in collaborating with designers in the detailing and design of architecturally-sensitive structures. Rob is an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at Pratt Institute and Columbia University GSAPP. His teaching focuses on the infusion of engineering technology into performative architectural design. His project work includes John F. Kennedy International Airport, Terminal One, Random House World Headquarters-The Park Imperial, American Airlines Arena, Columbia University’s Northwest Science Building, and “The Rising,” 9/11 Westchester Memorial. Rob is a licensed Professional Engineer in New York, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Alberta. Rob holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Rutgers University and a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Penn State University.

Jonatan Schumacher:
As Director of the Advanced Computational Modeling Team at Thornton Tomasetti, Jonatan Schumacher oversees and implements strategic development related to integrated structural design, facade design and building information modeling. He works closely with the structural, skin and performance groups, assisting project teams firm wide. Jonatan’s experience encompasses product design, robotics, architecture, engineering and computer science. His areas of expertise include digital fabrication, automatic and generative geometry, computational analysis and building information modeling.
Prior to joining Thornton Tomasetti in 2010, Jonatan worked at companies such as Gehry Technologies, SOM and Buro Happold.
In addition to having taught at Pratt Institute and Columbia University GSAPP, Jonatan is teaching classes at the PAE Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology. His courses include topics such as software interoperability, Object Oriented Programming, advanced Grasshopper modeling, BIM and big data in the AEC industry.
