May 27 Brunch - Homage to Catalonia (George Orwell)

Details

It's been a while since we did a non-fiction selection, and George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia has remained one of the seminal tellings of the Spanish Civil War. In this work, he provides his memories and observations fighting with the Republican Army.

Reviews:
"It shows us the heart of innocence that lies in revolution; also the miasma of lying that, far more than the cruelty, takes the heart out of it." - Time and Tide

About the Author:
Eric Blair (George Orwell) was born in India in 1903 and served with the Imperial Police in Burma before joining the Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War. He is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working class life in the north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, are widely acclaimed, as are his essays on politics, literature, language, and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945"
