Jean Boulton - Process Complexity: Foundations and Implications

In this session, Jean Boulton (www.embracingcomplexity.com) will introduce process complexity, building on the work of Ilya Prigogine, and show how it proffers an underpinning perspective from which to understand resilience, chaos, lock-in, and collapse. She will also explore how process complexity relates to the work of other foundational thinkers, including Kauffman, Stacey, Goodwin, Cilliers, and Morin.

Jean will then consider implications for practice – individual, organisational, and global.

Bio:
Jean Boulton studied physics at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. She worked in applied physics before turning to management and the social sciences. She is a visiting fellow at the University of Bath Department of Social and Policy Sciences and with Cranfield School of Management. In her work outside academia, Jean has held executive management positions and consulted to global organisations in both the private and not-for-profit sections. She lectures worldwide on post graduate programmes, offering a complexity perspective on topics including strategy, systemic change, international development, sustainability, and community engagement. She is lead author of Embracing Complexity (2015:OUP) and her new work The Dao of Complexity (2024:De Gruyter) expands on process complexity and explores resonances with other schools of thought including Daoism.
