Sunset Tour-Roosevelt Island Expedition

The wait list for this group does NOT operate in a conventional way. Those on the wait list will NOT be moved to the going list automatically.
IF APPLICABLE, ALWAYS JOIN THE WAIT LIST WITH LOW PRIORITY WHICH IS FREE. There is NEVER a need to pay extra to use Meetup's High Priority wait list classification for this group.

We are looking to add a number of First Timers to this event. However, you actually need to read the description of the event carefully.

ON THIS EVENT, WE WILL REQUIRE A MONETARY CONTRIBUTION AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EVENT BUT THE AMOUNT OF THAT CONTRIBUTION IS ENTIRELY UP TO YOU. THERE IS ALWAYS A MONEY BACK GUARANTEE IF YOU FEEL I HAVE NOT EARNED YOUR CONTRIBUTION.

Meetup charges an Organizer like me to run the group-it's not a fortune- but the amount was raised substantially and I spend much time and effort planning and preparing for an event. You can contribute whatever you want at the BEGINNING of an event in cash. (On many events, I will NOT accept any monetary contributions).

We have conducted a sunset tour of Roosevelt Island several times over the years but not that recently. The views on either side of the Island are great.

This will be a fun, fast paced comprehensive hiking tour of around 4-5 miles. We will stop a number of times to very briefly talk about what we see.

Roosevelt Island is an interesting but weird little island which has undergone significant change in the recent past with more to come. We will visit the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Four Freedoms Memorial Park, we’ll see some old ruins, the “Octagon” (which has an amazing spiral staircase) and is now an upscale residential building but was once a “lunatic” asylum and much more. We are also going to see the campus at Cornell Tech and their latest additions. There are always surprises along the way. (Photo by Pam C.). (And for about 3 seconds, I will re-enact a scene shot on the Island at the old Goldwater Hospital from the movie, the Exorcist. In this scene, the priest visits his mother at a nursing home he just committed her to. I will play the mother of the priest! Modesty aside, this is an award winning performance!)

We will meet BEFORE 4:30 P.M. We will have a short dinner stop. Bring food and water. This group does NOT stop on an event to buy food and probably NEVER will.

We will probably finish BY 8:30 P.M.

I am also going to ask that people not post any comments or questions prior to the event. You have more than enough information to do this once you get the meeting details. No offense, but I don’t need to know-and neither does anyone else- what you are doing that day if you can’t make it or what you think the weather will be. (You may even think you have some deep insights into something or other but ....you probably don't.) AFTER the event, post as many comments and photos as you like. PLEASE RESPECT MY WISHES ON THIS.

If the weather forecast is really bad, See Accuweather like I do, I will post a notice on the day of the tour by 12:00 P.M. If there is no notice, we go.
