Commit to in-memory: Talks from VoltDB, Oracle & GridGain!

Details

The NYC In-Memory Computing Meetup is honored to announce a (potential... the VoltDB team is working on it) visit to this event by VoltDB founder Dr. Michael Stonebraker, who Fortune Magazine rightfuilly called a “database prodigy” and “serial database genius” when reporting his 2015 winning of the A.M. Turing Prize, computer science’s highest award.

Stonebraker pioneered many key database concepts. He also founded Ingres, an early SQL database now known as Actian; PostgreSQL, still of the most popular open-source databases around; Streambase an event-processing database that is now part of Tibco; and Vertica, which Hewlett-Packard purchased in early 2011. Today he’s an adjunct professor at MIT CSAIL (the university’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory).

Dheeraj Remella, VoltDB's Chief Technologist, will 100% be speaking!

If this weren’t enough, we’ve also got a fantastic talk by Akmal Chaudhri, PhD., GridGain’s Technology Evangelist -- and Oracle TimesTen Product Manager Doug Hood!

BONUS! Plus hot pizza, cold beverages and cool raffle items. And like all of our meetups, this is a FREE event (thanks to the generous sponsorship of GridGain Systems).

Agenda:

  • 5:45 p.m. -- Food, beverages & find your seats!
  • 6:00 p.m. -- Talk 1 (Dheeraj & Stonebraker)
  • 6:40 p.m. -- Talk 2 (Akmal)
  • 7:20 p.m. -- Talk 3 (Doug)
  • 7:40 p.m. -- OPEN MIC (thanks to member Ruairi O' Connor for the suggestion!)
  • 7:55 p.m. -- raffle drawings
    > First prize: "Evo" smartphone-controlled coding robot
    > Second prize: Sega Genesis classic game console (with 81 games)
    > Third prize: $25 Amazon gift card
  • 8 p.m. Finis

> Talk 1: Dheeraj (and hopefully) Stonebraker! Details: Better decision-making needs a fast-decision processing and efficient high-speed storage engine to work together. It is even better when they scale together and exist in the same layer. We are going to see what this means in what we call as Real-Time “Intelligent” Decisions. Evolving dynamic rules for ever improving decisions requires machine learning integration into the front line data/event processing.

>> Talk 2: Akmal will share some of the current best practices in HTAP, and the differences between two of the more common technologies companies use: Apache® Cassandra™ and Apache® Ignite™. His talk is titled: "Comparing Apache Ignite and Cassandra for Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP)"

Summary: The 10x growth of transaction volumes, 50x growth in data volumes -- along with the drive for real-time visibility and responsiveness over the last decade -- have pushed traditional technologies including databases beyond their limits. Your choices are either buy expensive hardware to accelerate the wrong architecture, or do what other companies have started to do and invest in technologies being used for modern hybrid transactional/analytical processing (HTAP).

This session will cover:

  • The requirements for real-time, high volume HTAP
  • Architectural best practices, including how in-memory computing fits in and has eliminated tradeoffs between consistency, speed and scale
  • A detailed comparison of Apache Ignite and GridGain® for HTAP

>>> Talk 3: Doug's talk is titled: "Distributed SQL Tuning for TimesTen Scaleout - the fastest OLTP database"

Summary: TimesTen Scaleout is a shared nothing, scale-out SQL RDBMS, but you still need to tune it. Although existing 'non-scale out' TimesTen SQL will work unchanged, it may not be optimal. Find out how to use instances, distribution clauses, PK, FK, indexes and MVs to your advantage for OLTP and analytic workloads.
