We have done this Meetup, very successfully, before but I skipped it the last couple of years so it’s time to do it again. It will be a great opportunity for folks new to the city to get photographs of these iconic memorial lights, lit for just one night a year. We will shoot the lights from as many places as we can manage in one evening starting in Brooklyn Bridge Park, crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, and shooting in downtown Manhattan.

We'll gather in Brooklyn at the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream store at 1 Water Street, Brooklyn where Water Street meets Old Fulton Street and close to the Brooklyn Bridge Park at 6:15 pm.

The nearest subway station is High Street for the A train and C train. Walk along Cadman Plaza West to Old Fulton Street and down to the waterfront.

Clark Street Station for the 2 and the 3 trains is also not too far away as is York Street for the F train.

Sunset is around 7:15 pm. We’’ll need time to get to shooting positions by the iconic pier posts and setup. I expect this area to be fairly crowded with photographers.

While it's still light we'll take up positions at the iconic old pier posts (Old Pier 1) in the park to shoot across the river during blue hour, then we'll walk up to the Brooklyn Promenade for some shots from there. After that, we'll walk over to the Washington Street entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway and cross to Downtown Manhattan perhaps even getting close to the garages where the lights are actually installed. We'll make several stops en route to shoot the lights from different places.

Any and all cameras from professional models to cell phones are welcome at our events. Folks at all levels of expertise are also welcome.
Bring whatever gear you wish to use. Don’t forget your charged batteries and empty memory cards. If your cameras have been sitting unused it is recommended that you clean the lenses and sensor of any collected dust.

This will be a very long walk so I recommend very good comfortable walking shoes. Tripods are useful for evening night shooting but try to travel as light as possible! Pack whatever gear you need. I suggest you also bring water & snacks if you will need them. Don’t forget your charged batteries and empty memory cards.

Please be on time! The NYC Subway System is a hellscape of unimaginable delays that will wreak havoc on your mind, body, schedule, and soul. Plan your trip with some extra time!
Check the MTA schedules to ensure that the trains you need are running!

If you plan on driving, please use Google Maps to find the nearest parking garages but remember that we start in Brooklyn but end in Manhattan. Dress appropriately for the weather.

I will not be constantly checking my phone for messages once the meetup begins. Leave all your questions and comments in the chat on this event page before the meetup begins.

Details of this event may be added or changed at any time, so please check in periodically on this page.
