Celebrating 250th Anniversary - Part 1
Details
Join me on a tour of Downtown Manhattan where we trace the steps and artifacts of the American Revolution. Did you know there was a violent clash between the New York Sons of Liberty and British soldiers two months before the Boston Massacre? So one could say that the American Revolution actually started here in New York. The first skirmish, the first bullets, the first wounds. This violent clash was the Battle of Golden Hill.
We have all heard about the Culper Spy Ring created by George Washington. We will walk the path of some of these spies. There are also “ghost streets” in lower Manhattan that have completely vanished from the map, such as Hamill Place.
Washington lived in New York City because we were the first capital of the United States. There were two houses where he resided, and we will visit the areas where he spent his evenings.
Did you know that the patriots originally offered George Washington a kingship and he refused it? Some even considered Alexander Hamilton for president. We will check that out on our route and discover the reason why it never happened.
There is so much more for you to discover about New York City’s part in the American Revolution. We may even have a quick scavenger hunt if the sites are not too crowded. There is a lot to learn about the American Revolution here.
