GeoNYC kicks off 2019 with PostGIS, OSgeo and Rebuild Puerto Rico!

Welcome to the new year! GeoNYC is proud to announce our very first meetup of the year with some great new content and a new location (Grand Central Tech). It's been a few months since we saw each other, so we've got a lot to talk about.

Many of you use PostGIS in your daily work, and we are lucky enough to get Paul Ramsey to tell us a lot more about where PostGIS is going. It's a bit of a featurepalooza, and we are REALLY excited to see what he has to show us (and that he could swing by NYC from Vancouver to do it).

Next, we have Guido Stein (out of Boston) who is building out OSgeo, a national non-profit to strengthen and expand the open source geo community. He's going to explain how they plan to support and enable OSGeo community in local chapters across the US – and how YOU can get involved.

Paul Ramsey (twitter: @pwramsey) is an open source programmer and educator. He has been working with geospatial software for over 15 years: consulting to government and industry; building a geospatial software company; and programming on open source software. He co-founded the PostGIS spatial database project in 2001, and is currently an active developer and member of the project steering committee.

Guido Stein (twitter: @GuidoS) is a Geospatial Data Alchemist at Applied Geographics, Inc. He has been working with spatial data and community for the last two decades. He was a co-chair of FOSS4G Boston 2017 and has spent the last year working on building a solid non-profit to spread the word about open source geospatial within the US. He enjoys going to the dog park with his pup, eating Ramen, and knitting hats.

Jennifer Hinojosa (Research Assoc., Data Center Coord.) & Kathya Severino (Policy Analyst) represent Hunter College's Centro program (twitter: @CentroPR), which launched the Rebuild Puerto Rico digital platform. This online clearinghouse for stateside and Puerto Rican communities supports disaster relief and recovery, and provides information related to pre- and post- Hurricane Maria conditions. Centro’s interactive maps integrate Puerto Rico’s social, demographic, environmental, infrastructure, health, and economic data with GIS mapping capabilities to address current and future challenges related to post-Hurricane Maria, and aims to advance data capabilities, foster community development, and exchange information from the micro to macro levels.
