Red Rock Canyon at Whiting Ranch, 4 Miles

Red Rock Canyon is an amazing place, relatively easy to get to, and right in the middle of suburban Orange County (about a 2 mile walk behind a Ralph's grocery store in Foothill Ranch). The trail that follows the wash off the main trail is a little more challenging that a standard walking trail, but it is still relatively manageable for most people. This is a great place to go all year round with friends and family. Deer are relatively common here too.

There are a few places where runoff and small springs create small streams that take a few steps on rocks and logs to cross, but nothing too difficult. A hiking pole or two can be very helpful for the wash trail and small water crossings. You can get inexpensive ones at Walmart. The trail is partially shaded by large oak trees, about 2/3 of it is in open sun.

Parking; The parking lot at the main entrance on Portola Pkwy (at Market Pl.) is small, and costs $3. There is ample free parking across the street between the McDonald's and the gym. After the walk there are lots of places to get something to eat, go shopping, see a movie if you want to plan some of that into your day too. It's best not to park by the grocery store by the park/trailhead, there are signs that say not to, do so at your own discretion.

Meeting Spot; There is a big metal statue that looks like a sundial in the small park at the trailhead (Borrego Trail). That is where we will meet. The address for the Borrego Parking Lot and trailhead is 26701 Portola Parkway, Foothill Ranch, CA 92610 .

Restrooms; There are two portable restrooms at the trailhead, none on the trail. McDonald's is your best bet for a pre-hike restroom stop.

Dogs are not permitted on these trails.
