Nature Walkabout at UH Manoa- Insect Museum, Gardens
Sunday Aug 24th, 10am-12pm
Distance: 1mile on campus, some stairs
Free, recommend carpooling
Limited to 20 people!

  • To join, you must list your name on the carpool list link with a count of who is coming with you, and contact info.
  • Add yourself here.

We will do a learning tour of the museum- showcasing specimens of endemic bugs, introduced pests, and talk about various Hawai‘i-centric insect topics, so it’s related to the outdoors and native Hawaiian biodiversity. You’ll also be able to ask bug questions to a real-life entomologist! In case you’ve seen it in the news, our lab discovered the “Hawaiian “bone-collector” moth, unique to just a few forests in the Waiʻanae mountains! Afterwards we will walk to the Japanese Gardens, and possibly down to the Manoa stream.

(Note: there will be both dead and live insects! also, the collection has Naphthalene/mothballs, just a heads up if you are known to be sensitive to this compound)

Meeting location 3050 Maile Way, in the first floor lobby of the Gilmore Building. (The one with the big Kamehameha butterfly mural). Don’t go up the large staircase to the second floor, but to the lobby right by the mural!
We'll assemble here. Gilmore Building, lobby
Parking is open on the weekend along the road, so this shouldn’t be an issue!

Carpooling strongly recommended, list yourself here.
