Big Bird Tour
Details
We are heading out to the Central Valley to see the amazing Sandhill Cranes who winter here until around March. At just over 1 meter it is the third tallest bird in the continental U.S. with a wingspan of 6ft!
We'll meet at Cosumnes River Preserve Visitor Center 13501 Franklin Rd. Walnut Grove, CA. The Preserve is managed by a consortium of Conservation concerns including California Dept. of Fish and Wildliife, The Nature Conservancy, Bureau of Land Management and others.
If we are lucky, we will get to see many other amaziing birds, including Ring-necked Duck, Snow Geese, Bittern, Wilson's Snipe, Bald Eagle, Tundra Swan, White-faced Ibis, Cinnamon Teal, Rough-legged Hawk, long-billed Dowitcher and the list goes on.
We'll spend time in 3 locations of the complex's ponds and fields, spending about 1 hour in each place. There will be plenty of level walking (about 1.5mi total) and some driving and stopping in places on the roadside. Carpooling recommended.
Depending on where you are located in the bay area, it can take up to 1.5hrs to drive to the visitor center. Good hiking shoes, Day Pack with water, snacks, extra jacket and binoculars if you have them. I will have a few pair to loan. There are restrooms.
This is a paid event, but I like to work on a sliding scale.
