Join the "Focus on Social Justice" group

The Humanist Association of Orange County (HAOC) is a participating organization of OC Alliance for Racial Equity (OCARE). Our Focus on Social Justice initiative is looking to create awareness and change in various areas of social justice. We are collaborating with a number of local groups, including United Nations Association, Poor People’s Campaign-OC, and local OC progressive-minded groups to build ‘strength in numbers’ to make a difference. Meetings will be bi-weekly, every other Saturday, 10-11:30am. We will focus on areas that each of us have an interest in, educate and update the group and engage in lots of good, open, stimulating discussion all with the ultimate goal of taking some kind of action. Many of the topics have a racial justice intersection.

OCARE started as a grass roots effort to bring awareness to systemic racism and take action against racial inequity. We started by educating ourselves with a joint book study venture reading through Ibram X. Kendi's How to be an Antiracist. Several diverse participating organizations held book study nights throughout the week on different days and times. Participants could join any group if they happened to miss their own night since we all used the same book and chapter schedule. This effort paralleled with identifying partner organizations already making progress in this space and ended with a large group celebration to discuss next step action items. We continue to seek out partnering organizations that share this same goal and have now taken steps towards action. Each individual participating organization has continued on in a variety of ways. Some have started a new book study, others like HAOC have started Focus on Social Justice.
