Darwin Day is an international tradition celebrated each year around February 12 to honor the life and legacy of Charles Darwin and the enduring impact of evolutionary science. More than a birthday observance, Darwin Day is a celebration of curiosity, critical thinking, and the spirit of inquiry that drives scientific discovery. It’s a time to reflect on how evidence-based reasoning has deepened our understanding of the natural world, improved human well-being, and continues to shape conversations about science, education, and society. In that spirit, we are pleased to gather today to explore these ideas further through an engaging presentation and discussion.

Jason R. Wiles is a biology professor at Syracuse University who studies, among other foci, student learning, understanding, and acceptance of biological evolution. However, this is a rather different career than one might expect based on his origins. Raised in a creationist community in rural Arkansas, Wiles did not learn the facts about evolution until he was a graduate student. In this presentation, Dr. Wiles will consider Darwin’s place in the history of evolutionary science, his own personal evolution, and what he has learned about changing minds through research and experience.
