Details

This is an adaptation of Alexei Tolstoy’s story “The Family of the Vourdalak,” which was also the basis for the third act of anthology film Black Sabbath (1963). This version adds much more detail including accurate Renaissance costumes and mannerisms, meticulous character development, and the grim intricacies of dealing with a vourdalak.

A young French nobleman is lost in an eastern European country after being attacked by bandits. He seeks shelter at a remote castle, where the residents admit him but seem preoccupied with other matters. In particular, marauding Turks have burned a local village, and the family’s patriarch has gone off alone to deal with them. His warning that he may not be himself when he returns has everyone worried, and with good reason. The plot progresses slowly and disturbingly with surreal and surprising special effects.
